It's a question I ponder over quite a bit. I've gotten to know a number of actors in Atlanta and Georgia over the years. Some I've watched continuously move up and their careers expand. Others I've watched over the years waiting for them to get a really meaty part, even if just on the local level, to come their way, and I haven't quite seen that happen.
So I pose the questions: Are writers and directors focusing enough on actors as a part of their projects? Are we doing what we can to give actors parts that stretch them?
Conversely, are actors pushing directors and writers for those types of parts? Or are they settling?
Although they've all had different career paths and starting points for the careers, when I look at a Gary Anthony Williams, Julia Roberts, Ed Helms, Donald Glover, Holly Hunter, Dakota Fanning, Raven Symone, etc. the talent that comes out of Georgia has been steady, but are we doing enough to find the folks who are here right now? Are we hungry to be the one who had a Holly Hunter in their short or feature early in their career and possibly gave them a role that helped their momentum?
Or is this something that's not even on our radar?

I think it's an important point you raise. It comes and goes, this focus on the actors here. I think it's timeline that throws people off -- how long it takes and how often really good actors keep working out, or writers and directors keep learning the newest approaches.

It does take a while for actors to develop. Some of the catches honestly wouldn't have happened because actors weren't ready till they've had more experience.
But, I'm wondering how many of those director/actor relationships on a local level could have developed here. The theater side of Atlanta seems to have had that over the years and has been recognized, locally and I believe even nationally, and it's also been an audience draw.
If we want to grow here, having actors in roles that make them standout is a must. Jennifer Lawrence, Greta Gerwig, Parker Posey. It's a decent list of actors who moved from the festival circuit onto greater things.

As a writer, I would love to hear from actors what characters they are drawn to. I know how I can get lost in my own world when creating a screenplay, but, I am particularly inspired by creating worlds around characters as well!!!
